As more life began to penetrate deeper and deeper into the ocean, It opened up more niches for predators to occupy. One of these species was the cuttlenaut. Unlike its ancestor, it never travels far above the ocean floor, using its bioluminescent tentacles to illuminate the sea floor below them. Their shell has now atrophied into a cuttlebone that provides structure to the organism. Due to the loss of their buoyant shell, they are now heavier, and require a little more speed to remain aloft in the water column. Because of this, it has developed fins on the side of their heads, which also makes it more maneuverable. Most of their eyes atrophied away- as they were redundant. The two remaining eyes became more complex and more sensitive to lower levels of light. They primarily feed on miners. They do this by using their bioluminescent tentacles, which are wider and can be used as scoops, to dig them out of the ground. They will then grab the proboscis and the shell and rip the animal from its shell. It also feeds on scavisus that are drawn to their bioluminescent lights, thinking they're the lights of another scavisus due to their poor vision. They will then be snatched up and torn apart by the cuddlenaut- if it doesn't realize its not another scavisus. They will also sometimes feed on burrowclams, but the burrowclam usually is able to retract its proboscis before the cuttlenaut has time to grab it. Once this happens, the cuttlenaut has virtually no way of reaching the organism's soft insides- as they are not strong enough to pry or break the shell open.
