The burrowclam got its name because it did away with its ancestors habit of rapidly digging in the sand, and instead lives there full time! Their shells have grown longer, narrowing at the top. 90-98% of the shell is buried in the sediment. Their feeding tube pokes out of the shell, and when predators pass by, is quickly retracted into the shell. The remains of a burrowclams shell often provide shelter for many other species when the burrow clam is dead.
