Benefitting from the protection of the Torpjet, the Torpnest adapted to ensure that for-jets use it every year, and that it is protected when not in use. The underside of the Torpnest is covered in a chitinous shell, a dormant gene once used by an ancestor long ago in the beginning of the Prevailnoffian era. The gill slits are able to open an close at will. During Torpjet breeding season, the gill slits are wide open, inviting Torpjets to lay their eggs in them. During the rest of the year, the gill slits are barely open at all, just enough to let water and plankton in. This keeps predators from eating them. Spores are attached to baby Torpjets after they hatch, sending the spores out into the open sea with the young.
