While the diamondleaf neakweed was the descendant of the reef neakweeds that travelled eastward, those that travelled west became the seafern. Seaferns have modified their lower bulbs into leaves, with them being directly attached to the stem. These leaves run the length of the seafern's stem, ending at the stems that support the spore-bulbs. The sheer number of leaves has drastically increased its photosynthetic capabilities.
