The Helmsurfer split from its ancestor as Waveskimmers evolved and began to spread, beginning to use them to travel across the ocean. They have grown smaller, allowing multiple individuals to live comfortably on one Waveskimmer. Although one might think finding a mate is difficult when stuck on a raft in the open ocean, Waveskimmers often group together, so multiple groups of Helmsurfers might live in a single raft. Helmsurfers defend their home from predators such as the Echinovisus with their hard, spiked shells. They do this by gathering on the underwater portions of the Waveskimmer when there is a Echinovisus nearby and clinging on with their spiked shells pointing outward. This is usually enough to deter the predator, but sometimes it is not enough. If the Waveskimmer that a Helmsurfer lives on is eaten, the Helmsurfers use their buoyant shells and the webbing between their legs to swim to the nearest Waveskimmer. If there is not one nearby, the Helmsurfers will die. Helmsurfers also enjoy the protection of Torpjets during their breeding season, staying safe on the top of the Waveskimmer until they leave. Helmsurfers lay their eggs on top of unoccupied Waveskimmer plants.
