The freshwater helmcrawler is extremely similar to its costal cousin, although it is larger. It has developed claws on its feet to avoid being swept away in the river's current. Eggs are laid in rock creases to protect them. They eat freshwater plankton and detritus via their tube shaped mouths. Their shells are a mottled grey and brown coloration to hide from predators, with a light blue underside.
