As the Reefern explosively radiated in response to the end-prevailnoffian mass extinction, many lost their filter-feeding capabilities. Now, with the seas rife with photosynthesizers, few other plants can compete with the large numbers of photosynthesizers. However, one species of reefern managed to speciate and adapt to the sea of photosynthesizers. The featherfern- instead of decreasing its filter-feeding capabilities, increased it. Its leaves are now feathery, consisting of thin photosynthetic 'hairs'. This allows for greater surface area for its filter-feeding hairs. These hairs are covered in barbs, spearing microorganisms that are unfortunate to either swim or drift into them, causing them to spill their insides. The hairs then absorb the resulting mush. In order to keep other plants at bay, it releases herbicidal poisons from its roots, creating a one-meter-wide radius of death to any plant that grows within it. However, their numbers are kept in check by nautoreaps.
