As the Echinovisus enjoyed a relatively peaceful life in the open ocean with few predators, some took their size to the next level, and have become so large that virtually nothing but the boldest of Torpjets can attack it. Their baleen-like teeth have reappeared through atavism- and have hypertrophied, allowing them to capture more plankton. Their lateral eyes are more spread out, giving them a wider field of view. This allows them to spot attacking Torpjets with greater ease- though they can rarely avoid them due to their slow speed. However, they are so large that they are hard for the Torpjet to stun. In addition to this, they still retain their cryptic coloration, allowing them to blend in with their environment. They are typically solitary, and only meet to breed. Males will attract females by displaying their bioluminescent lights- flashing them on and off in patterns. Because they are so large, they can no longer lay their eggs in Waveskimmers. Instead, they will simply disperse their countless eggs into the ocean. Few will grow to their maximum size- as many will be consumed by predators.
